Breed: Racka (Hortobágy Racka)
Origin: Hungary
31WX45L
This rare fleece comes from the Racka sheep, an ancient Hungarian breed kept for over a thousand years by the nomadic Magyar tribes of the steppes. Easily recognized by their iconic twisted “unicorn” horns, both rams and ewes of this breed grow impressive spiraling horns that give them a mythical, almost otherworldly appearance.
Today, the Racka is listed as a rare conservation breed, with only around 2,500 animals remaining worldwide. It is actively protected by breeders and conservation programs in Hungary, Europe, and North America.
This particular fleece was lovingly sourced from Maria, a dedicated small-scale shepherd in rural France who helps preserve this endangered breed. The fleece features a long, creamy wavy staple with golden sun-kissed hues, offering a rustic elegance. Beneath the coarse outer coat lies a soft undercoat with reddish-brown tones, giving the wool depth, contrast, and a rich, earthy charm. The fleece is mounted on a base of white soft Merino wool backing, adding comfort, structure, and a touch of modern refinement to this otherwise ancient and wild fiber.
