Willow Buying Guide

Not sure which willow is right for
your project? Start here. Choose based on what you want to do.

What are you trying to do?

…I want to build a living Hedge

If you plant regular size cuttings, you will grow a hedge, as the growth
will always be coming from the bottom, near the ground. It could be possible to
train this hedge into a loosely woven fence, but it will not be tidy, and will
take years to achieve the effect.

A single row of most varieties of willow will provide a decent screen,
but two rows planted in a staggered pattern will obviously be denser, and will
also allow you to alternate pruning years, so that you always have something
there

Natural privacy screens

Garden boundaries

Living hedges that can be shaped over time

What varieties to choose:

Salix Fragilis Hutchinson yellow- Fast growing yellow
willow ideal for living privacy hedges, windbreaks, living willow fence and
winter colour. Naturally develops a dense, bushy habit. Hardiness zone 3-9

Noire de Villaine: Perfect for smaller Hedge or Fedge.  Hardiness zone 3

Salix X Flame – Hardiness zone 3. Good if
you want to make a privacy hedge. Hardines zone 3-7

Vitellina

Rubikins

… I want to stop erosion or stabilize soil

Willow is widely used for soil stabilization and ecological restoration.

Riverbanks and shorelines

Slopes and drainage areas

Wet or unstable soils

What to choose:

Shop Erosion Control Willow

Salix purpurea 'Goldstones'

Erosion control ( root mass dense) slender  golden light colored rods, dries to light green tone, small grey catkins- zone 3

Salix purpurea 'Irette'. Hardy zone 3

SX 64

…I want to weave a basket

Shop Brown Dried Basketry Willow

Hutchinson yellow- used in basketry to add some colour. The thicker rods tend to be soft after soaking but still nice to use in baskets for accents. Larger sizes
work great for ribs.

Noire de Villaine: Thicker rods more ornamental as a feature in a basket

Goldstones:

Salix x Flame: Used to add colour to a basket. Hardiness zone 3-7 Used primarily as
weaver for brilliant color accents

Salix alba 'Britzensis- to add accent colour to baskets

Green Edna:  With it’s flecible rods, it is a
top choice for framework in basketry (weavers stakes and borders)

Packing twine:hardiness to zone 3-13  Slender and flexible rods that are great for
all basketry uses and excellent for frame basketry.
Bark can
be harvested for weaving on 2-3 year old rods

Salix purpurea 'Irette'. Hardy zone 3

Salix purpurea 'Koch Brown'

Salix purpurea 'Frances Red'- a favourite weaver. Long,
straight and firm rods for stakes and borders.

Salix purpurea 'Green Dicks'- hardy zone 3

Bleu: best when used for stakes in a basket any part of basket. Bark
harvest from 2-3 yr old rods

Acutifolia :One of the most highly sought after. Brilliant matte black finish and lovely flexible weavers. Has a blue “bloom” on the skin when cut and dried. Another “soft”
willow that is good for accents. Hard to grow and everything loves to eat it,
but worth the struggle for the darker color in your baskets.

X Americana:Grows large straight rods with good flexibility. All around great
basketry willow

Vitellina : Fast growing and large. Rods turn a bright yellow/organge/red during
the winter time. Great for accents in basketry and peeling for bark.

Nishiki: , but the finer rods are very good for weaving

Dicky meadows; excellent weavers

Koch brown

Polish purple.  Bark can be harvest after 2-3
yrs. Great any part of basket

impression of texture. Hardiness zone 3

Salix x Flame: hardiness zone 3-7

Salix alba 'Britzensis- bright coral branchy stems. Hardiness
zone 2

the most and might be a little branchy.
