Salix acutifolia — Long-leaved Violet Willow
Salix acutifolia is a distinctive willow known for its deep violet-purple stems and striking blue, chalky bloom on new growth. The blue coating can rub off with handling, so the strongest colour is best appreciated when the rods are left undisturbed or used fresh as green willow.
Although it is not one of the most productive willows, acutifolia produces slender, flexible rods with exceptional colour, making it a valuable choice for specialty weaving and decorative projects.
Silvery catkins appear before the leaves in spring, making this willow particularly useful for floristry and early-season pollinators. If left uncoppiced, it can develop into an attractive small tree; regular coppicing encourages colourful new stems and keeps the plant smaller.
