Salix purpurea ‘Purple Dicks’
Salix purpurea ‘Purple Dicks’ is a versatile willow known for its long, straight rods and distinctive purple-toned stems. Fresh growth has a green colour with a subtle purple tone before developing deeper purple colouring as the stems mature.
Its long, flexible rods are well suited to basketry and woven projects, while larger stems can be used for wattle fencing and structural applications. It is also a good choice for living willow structures and adds attractive colour to the landscape.
When coppiced annually, Purple Dicks produces a reliable supply of long, slender rods for weaving. If left to grow for two to three years, it can produce larger, stronger wood suitable for wattle fencing and other structural projects.
Uses:
Basketry and woven projects
Living willow structures
Wattle fencing
Structural garden projects
Decorative stems and winter colour
Productive coppice plantings
Hardiness Zone: 3–7
