Salix viminalis — ‘Common Osier’
Salix viminalis is a vigorous, fast-growing willow with long, straight rods and strong annual growth. It produces abundant stems each year, making it an excellent choice for living fences, windbreaks, biomass plantings, and larger willow structures.
Its straight, flexible rods are ideal for constructing living structures, woven hedges, and garden projects. The strong rods are also well suited to wattle fence weaving and other structural applications.
Viminalis is particularly useful when planted in rows as a windbreak. It can be coppiced annually for a regular supply of smaller stems and kindling, or left for 2–3 years to produce larger rods and firewood as part of a short-rotation coppice system. It is also widely used for biomass production.
