Salix triandra ‘Noire de Villaine’

Salix triandra 'Noire de Villaine' is a distinguished French basketry willow known for its robust growth and aesthetic appeal. This willow variety is celebrated for its tall, strong rods and attractive olive-green bark, making it a superb choice for both practical and ornamental uses.

Key Features and uses:

    • Catkins: In early May, 'Noire de Villaine' produces long green catkins, adding to its seasonal charm.
    • Stem and Bark: The young stems are dark reddish-brown to chocolate, and the mature bark is olive-brown with a rough, patchy texture that provides a unique visual interest. The glossy olive-green bark enhances its ornamental appeal, especially when planted in groups.
    • Foliage: The leaves are long, with dark red stalks and bud scales. They are dark green and shiny on the upper surface, pale green underneath, and turn attractive yellow in autumn.
    • Uses: Ideal for basketry due to its strong, flexible stems, this willow is also used for constructing small living structures and windbreaks. It can be used as a peeled willow for crafting and is visually striking in winter

Growth & care:

    • Growth and Form: This vigorous willow grows up to 6 to 8 feet in one season after coppicing, making it one of the most stocky and rapid-growing triandra selections. It can also be grown into a tree, with mature bark peeling in intriguing cinnamon-coloured patterns. The tall, unbranched rods of 'Noire de Villaine' look dramatic and eye-catching, especially when planted together.
