Salix integra ‘Hakuro-Nishiki’ (Dappled Willow)

Salix integra ‘Hakuro-Nishiki’, commonly known as Dappled Willow, is a captivating deciduous shrub or small tree renowned for its striking appearance and seasonal charm. This compact plant boasts a variety of colours throughout the year, making it a standout feature in any garden.

Key Features and uses:

    • Vibrant Foliage: In spring, the plant produces narrow, lance-shaped leaves that start with a delicate pink hue. As the season progresses, the foliage matures to a beautiful mix of pink, creamy-white, and green, before turning green in summer. In the fall, the leaves transition to yellow before falling, revealing coral red stems that add winter interest.
    • Colour Variation: In colder regions (zones 4 and 5), only the new growth will turn coral red, while in warmer climates, the entire length of the branches will display this vibrant red colour.
    • Ornamental Value: This shrub is celebrated for its year-round visual appeal.
    • Landscape Use: Perfect for garden beds, borders, informal hedges, and privacy screens. Ideal for city gardens, cottage gardens, or along streams and ponds.
    • Floristry: Adds a unique touch to floral arrangements with its colourful branches.

Growth & Care:

    • Sunlight: Prefers full sun but can tolerate some afternoon shade, especially in hot summer areas.
    • Soil: Thrives in fertile, moist, and well-drained soils. Best foliage colour is achieved in cooler summer areas (north of USDA Zone 7).
    • Height and Spread: Typically grows to 4-6 feet tall (120-180 cm) and 5-7 feet wide (150-210 cm).
    • Maintenance: Easy to grow and maintain. Prune in late winter to early spring to encourage vigorous growth and more colourful foliage.
    • Monitoring: Watch for aphids, caterpillars, leaf beetles, sawflies, willow anthracnose, and rust.
